Heavy Duty Maintenance Mechanic

Usibelli Coal Mine, Inc. (UCM) is seeking an experienced full-time Maintenance Mechanic to join our team in Healy, Alaska. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform electrical & mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting diagnosis, assembly, and installation on fixed and mobile surface mining equipment.
  • Experienced in the maintenance and support of Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, Hitachi surface mining product lines.
  • Perform electrical and mechanical maintenance on 12- 24 volt mobile mining equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, scheduled maintenance, and complete reports and work orders as required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 8,000 hours in the maintenance of mobile mining equipment. Up to 6000 hours credited for documented hours spent to successfully complete trade school, military service as a mobile equipment technician, technical school or apprenticeship training.
  • Must have proven and demonstrated skills to diagnose electrically controlled diesel-powered equipment and hydraulic systems.
  • Experience operating, repairing and troubleshooting stationary generators, heaters, pumps, and light plants.
  • High School diploma or GED

  • Must be able to communicate and coordinate with others and as assigned in groups.
  • Must deliver quality accurate diagnosis, repairs, assembly, and maintenance consistently.

  • Must have a full set of mechanics tools per the UCM tool list within 120 days of hire.
  • Must meet UCM fitness for duty requirements.
  • The successful candidate must pass a post-offer physical and drug test.

Journeyman Electrician

Healy, Alaska

Usibelli Coal Mine (UCM) is seeking an experienced Journeyman Electrician to join our electrical maintenance team in Healy, Alaska.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Installation of conduit; installation and termination of general purpose power and lighting circuits, and mineral insulated cables.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and corrects electrical problems in production and support equipment.
  • Install, remove, repair, overhaul, and test electrical equipment.
  • Perform installation, removal and repair of switchgear, transformers, starters, controllers, capacitors, etc.
  • Read electrical and related blueprints.
  • Work to meet current electrical codes and company policy and practices.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Individual shall be familiar with the installation of Motor Control Centers, Programmable Logic Controllers, and Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems.
  • Previous experience with the use of low, medium, & high voltage testing equipment, such as Fluke multi meters, and Meggers is recommended.
  • Dragline electrical experience is a plus.

Expectations:

  • A Journeyman Electrician with 2 or more years of mining experience.
  • Must be able to work independently and have experience in a mining environment.
  • Must pass a post-offer physical and drug test.
  • Have or will obtain an MSHA Surface Coal Mining Electrical Certification green card within 120 days of date of hire as a condition of employment.

Mining Engineer

Healy, Alaska

The mining engineer is responsible for technical and mine plan support to meet production targets for mining operations. This position also acts as the primary backup to the production forepersons and requires working the swing shift as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Evaluate the working conditions in the field to ensure the safety of all employees, including but not limited to active working faces, current dumping areas, stability of short and long-term slopes, traffic patterns and pit access routes, and road conditions.
  • Interact and communicate effectively and professionally with mine management, supervisory, engineering, and production personnel.
  • Prepare detailed short and long-term mine plans, including stripping and coal production targets by material type, removal method, and target date.
  • Effectively implement and follow the approved and communicated short and long-term mine plans, including evaluating changing conditions, accurately measuring stripping and coal production volumes in the field, and meeting all production targets on time.
  • Prepare effective, professional drawings to complement the mine plans.
  • Prepare, manage, and implement the dragline plan to ensure maximum efficiency, productivity, and compliance with the approved dragline plan.
  • Communicate the current production state in detail, including field changes to the mine plan, mining progress for all active areas, and tons and yards moved by a shift to all production, engineering, and supervisory personnel.
  • Update and manage the production database daily, including preparing and distributing daily reports.
  • Investigate, research, and implement new cost-saving mining methods when practical. 
  • Effectively manage coal quality and minimize penalties by preparing, managing, and implementing a detailed coal blending plan that incorporates daily samples and coal blend calculations and is communicated through pit bench and stockpile quality maps.
  • Prepare, manage, and implement pit dewatering plans, including managing pumps and pumping personnel and appropriate routing of pumped water by the approved drainage and sediment control and surface water management plans dictate.
  • Drilling and blasting oversight.
  • Understand and ensure compliance with the approved ground control plan and all permit requirements. 
  • Provide training to production and mine personnel in correct and safe mining techniques and procedures.
  • Work on special projects or other duties as assigned.

Skills & Requirements: 

  • Solid understanding of the practice of mine engineering, including staying current on emerging technologies and methods.
  • Desire and ability to promote a safety culture, including compliance with all safety and environmental regulations and safe work practices.
  • Ability to prepare effective, detailed designs and plans for dragline and truck/ shovel pits.
  • Ability to implement those plans in the field.
  • Working knowledge of surveying and ability to perform basic surveying tasks, such as field staking, to support the mine plan.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.
  • Consistently provide results in the face of rough field conditions and strict deadlines.
  • Candidate must live in Healy, Alaska, or within the Denali Borough. 

Education & Qualifications: 

  • B.S. in Mining/Civil/Geological Engineering or equivalent.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Alaska (PE) or willing and able to become registered when eligible.
  • Possess a current valid Driver’s License.
  • Must pass a post-offer physical and drug test.
